Allen Carr Mackey
June 21, 1983 - August 19, 2016
Allen Carr Mackey passed away on August 19th, 2016, after blessing his family, friends, and community with 33 years of remarkable life and limitless love. Allen was an incredibly intelligent, remarkably kind, and fearlessly loving man with such gentle strength and wisdom beyond his years. Allen insisted that in life, only people matter, and he was committed to being compassionate towards everyone he met.
Allen was born in Springfield, Illinois, in 1983 to his parents, Ann Carr Mackey and Larry Allen Mackey. Allen grew up with his brother, Christopher Carr Mackey, in Carmel, Indiana. Both brothers graduated from Brebeuf Jesuit High School. In 2006, Allen graduated with highest honors from Purdue University with a degree in Materials Science & Engineering, and he went on in his scientific career to obtain a master's degree in Biomedical Engineering, graduating with highest honors in 2012 while working in dental research at Indiana Nanotech. Allen retired from scientific work in 2015 but was never finished learning. He pursued knowledge of science, music, art, sport, and the human condition every day of his life.
Seven years ago, Allen met the love of his life, Lauren Bogue Mackey. In 2013, the couple secretly married in Breckenridge, Colorado, at the top of Sapphire Point, enveloped in the beauty of unadulterated nature and unconditional love. In his marriage, as in all of his relationships, Allen was unyieldingly kind, supportive, and tender. His capacity for love grew with each new friend and family member, a power that could be seen plainly on his face the first time he held his first infant nephew.
Allen embraced life's many challenges and helped countless others face their own problems and fears. By sharing music, lending his wisdom, or simply listening, Allen had a way of giving each person he helped exactly what they needed, finding exactly the right words even in times when it seemed there could be none. He was a mentor, a companion, a hero, and a role model to countless people. He was sought by many for support and protection. Allen loved everyone and believed that all people were inherently good. He will be missed every day.
Allen is survived by his loving wife, Lauren Bogue Mackey; his mother, Ann Carr Mackey; his father, Larry Allen Mackey and wife Sarah; his brother, Christopher Carr Mackey and wife Lucy; his nephews Jackson Carr Mackey and Christopher Carr Mackey, Jr.; and three step brothers, Sam, Will, and Micah Hauke. He was preceded in passing by his grandparents, Richard and Isabel Carr and Willis and Alice Mackey. Allen also blessed a large and extended family of aunts, uncles, cousins, and more throughout the world.
A Living Memory service will be at 1:00 p.m. Eastern Time on Wednesday, August 24th, 2016, at Flanner and Buchanan - Carmel at 325 East Carmel Drive, Carmel, Indiana. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service, also at the funeral home. Graveside services will follow at Crown Hill Cemetery.
Allen's family asks that you remember Allen, his love, and the triumphant example he has set for all. Should people wish to take action in his remembrance, we know Allen would have wanted charitable gifts to benefit the wholeness of our global human family. We think Allen would have appreciated a small donation to a program like Smile Train (www.smiletrain.org) that improves the lives of children throughout the world.
